Altep offers Blackout for faster, more efficient redactions in Relativity.

Manual redaction takes time
Altep hosts and manages data for a number of e-discovery platforms, and is an Orange Level Best in Service provider of the popular Relativity review platform, published by kCura. On average, Altep saves clients nearly half of their expected cost for electronic data discovery. In order to maintain that level of efficiency and service, Altep constantly seeks out innovative litigation and review technologies to add to their robust list of service offerings.
One of the most time- and resource-consuming aspects of the review process in any platform has traditionally been the redaction workflow. In the past, when Altep managed a review for a client in Relativity, redaction has required that teams of reviewers first identify documents requiring redactions, then wait for second pass review to manually apply redactions to those documents. Altep had previously sought out solutions that would reduce the amount of time spent in this manual redaction workflow, but none were closely integrated with Relativity. Having a solution that was directly ingrained into Relativity workflows was crucial to Altep’s ability to guarantee the quality and efficiency of redactions for their clients.
Automating for efficiency
Altep had worked with Milyli, a Chicago-based software development firm, on a prior Relativity customization project, and was one of the first organizations that Milyli introduced to Blackout, a brand-new assisted redaction tool. Judy Torres, Vice President of Information Services at Altep, was shown Blackout and recognized the potential for savings right away: “The idea of being able to automate redactions within Relativity, and the cost efficiencies it would yield for our clients, was very appealing.”
Altep was one of the first adopters of Blackout, so the Application Support/Database Administrators were careful to heavily vet Blackout in a Relativity test environment prior to deploying it to any production environments. Once Blackout was tested, the Project Managers and Sales teams began to introduce clients to the capability and identify matters where Blackout could provide the most value. Shortly thereafter, Altep was able to deploy Blackout in a matter where it was particularly beneficial because the documents to be reviewed were poor quality and would have required a lengthy manual review, and in which the client needed a 24-hour turnaround.
The documents had been scanned, imaged, and OCR’ed, so Blackout was able to easily identify patterns in the data which met Altep’s redaction criteria, including personal account information, contract numbers, and Social Security numbers. Because of the poor document quality, Blackout’s identification of search terms and phrases to redact was somewhat imperfect; however, using the application’s detailed error report, Altep’s reviewers were able to identify pages needing further investigation. With two reviewers, Altep was able to redact and quality check the 5,000 document set within the 24-hour time limit without any bugs or issues. “Overall,” Judy Torres said, “We were pleasantly surprised to get a 55% application of redactions that would have otherwise been manually applied.”
Faster review, better service
Altep’s client was impressed with their ability to quickly redact a complex document set and meet a high-stakes deadline without incurring excessive expenses, and Altep’s reviewers were pleased with the usability and efficiency of Blackout. Because of this early success, Altep has been offering current and potential clients demonstrations of Blackout and touting its potential benefits in their hosted matters. Clients are excited to see how Blackout can save them time and money, and Altep now has another cutting-edge solution that allows their teams to better serve clients.
